Best Wishes from the SSHGA for a stellar 2019!

Best wishes for a wonderful Hogmanay from the SSHGA!

Hogmanay is the Scottish name for new year celebrations. It is not known exactly where the word comes from, although it is believed to come from the French word ‘hoginane’ meaning ‘gala day’. It is thought to have first been used widely following Mary, Queen of Scots’ return to Scotland from France in 1561.

May you First Foot bring you good luck in 2019!

First footing” (or the “first foot” in the house after midnight) is still common across Scotland. To ensure good luck for the house the first foot should be a dark male, and he should bring with him symbolic pieces of coal, shortbread, salt, black bun and a wee dram of whisky.

And in the words of the immortal Robert Burns!

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!”

Mark your calendar and plan to join us July 27 and 28, 2019 for the 73rd Annual Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games & Clan Gathering!
